The healthiest mead, ranked.
Mead is honey, water and yeast, and it is the only mainstream drink with no grain, grape or agave in it. That makes it gluten-free by construction rather than by distillation, and it makes it the one category that is never vegan. The chemistry problem is not the honey, it is the sugar that survives fermentation, because a dry mead drinks like a white wine and a dessert mead lands closer to a liqueur, and almost nobody prints the number.
What is the healthiest mead?
The lightest mead is a dry one at a low strength, and sweetness matters more than alcohol here, which is unusual. Bee d'Vine is fermented dry and scores better than sweet meads that are weaker than it. For the lowest total load, a session mead like B. Nektar Zombie Killer at 6% is the lightest thing in the category. Avoid the combination that defines mead's reputation: high strength plus high residual sugar, which is Viking Blod at 19% and sweet. Every mead is gluten-free and no mead is vegan.

What makes one mead healthier than another
- ▸Sweetness is the whole ballgame: dry ferments the sugar away, sweet keeps it
- ▸ABV spans 5% to 20%, a wider range than any other category
- ▸Gluten-free by construction, since there is no grain at all
- ▸Never vegan. Honey is the base ingredient, not an additive
- ▸Sulfites are commonly added exactly as in winemaking
- ▸Fruit meads (melomels) add polyphenols a plain mead does not have

Factors are scored 1 (very low) to 5 (very high). Load is the mean of all seven. Hang is the overall hangover index, which weights congeners and ethanol dose more heavily than a flat mean does, which is why the two columns do not always agree.

FAQ
What is mead? ▾
Fermented honey. Mead is made from honey, water and yeast, which makes it the oldest fermented drink known and the only mainstream one containing no grain, grape or agave. Variations get their own names: a melomel adds fruit, a metheglin adds spices, a cyser adds apple, and a braggot adds malt, which is the one style that is not gluten-free. It is regulated and largely made like wine, and in the US the TTB classifies it as a honey wine.
How much alcohol is in mead? ▾
Anywhere from 5% to 20% ABV, which is the widest range of any category on this site. Session meads sit at 5 to 8%, traditional mead is usually 11 to 14%, and some bottlings reach 19 or 20%, which is fortified-wine territory without being fortified. Because mead is poured into wine glasses regardless, a 5oz pour of a 19% mead delivers roughly 60% more alcohol than the same pour of a 12% one with nothing about the glass to tell you.
Is mead gluten-free? ▾
Yes, and uniquely so. Mead contains no grain at all, so unlike vodka or whisky it is not gluten-free because distillation removed the gluten, it is gluten-free because there was never any in it. That makes it a safer bet than any distilled spirit for drinkers who react despite distillation. The single exception is braggot, a mead-beer hybrid brewed with malted barley, which is not gluten-free.
Is mead vegan? ▾
No. Honey is the base ingredient rather than a processing aid, so no mead is vegan, and this is the only category on this site where that is true across the board. Wines and beers can be non-vegan through fining agents like isinglass or gelatin, but that is a production choice a producer can change. With mead it is the drink itself.
How many calories are in mead? ▾
At least 98 in a 5oz pour of a 12% mead and about 155 in the same pour at 19%, counting alcohol alone. Residual sugar is on top of that and it is the part nobody publishes. A dry mead is close to the alcohol-only figure; a dessert mead can carry a great deal more. This is the one category where the honest answer is a floor rather than a number, because the variable that moves it most is the one producers do not disclose.
Does mead give you a bad hangover? ▾
It has that reputation and the reason is arithmetic rather than anything mystical about honey. Traditional mead is often 12 to 15%, sweet mead hides that strength completely, and it is served in wine pours. High ethanol dose plus high residual sugar plus nothing in the taste to slow you down is the recipe for a rough morning. A dry mead at 12% or a session mead at 6% behaves very differently.
Is mead healthier than beer or wine? ▾
It sits in the same broad tier and beats both on two specific points: no grain, so genuinely gluten-free, and no tannins, since there are no skins or seeds. It loses on residual sugar, which is usually far higher than in a dry wine or a standard beer, and on strength, since traditional mead runs above most table wine. Honey brings trace antioxidants but not in quantities that matter at drinking volumes. Choose a dry mead and it compares well to white wine; choose a sweet one at 19% and it does not.
Is all mead sweet? ▾
No, though most of what reaches shelves is. Sweetness in mead is a fermentation decision: let the yeast finish and you get a dry mead with very little sugar left, stop it early or back-sweeten and you get a sweet one. Both are sold simply as mead, frequently in the same bottle shape, and there is no labelling standard requiring the distinction. Producers who state a sweetness level on the label are handing you the most important number in the category, and it is worth favouring them for that alone.
