Hot toddy

The classic recipe and four more, each with exact measures and its calories, sugar and strength per mug, worked out from USDA FoodData Central and our spirit data. Then which whiskey to pour, and what the evidence says about a hot toddy for a cold.

The short answer

A classic hot toddy is 1½ oz whiskey, 1 tbsp honey, ½ oz lemon juice and 4 oz hot water: 172 calories, 18 g of sugar, 9.2% alcohol and one standard drink. Stirred into hot water, it keeps about 85% of its alcohol (USDA). For a cold, the heat and honey may ease symptoms; the whiskey is not what helps, and it should not be mixed with cold medicine.

Hot toddy recipes, with the math

Spirits are 80 proof, the legal minimum for US whiskey and rum; a 90 proof bottle adds about 12 calories per 1½ oz. One mug is one serving. ABV is the drink as poured.

Honey-lemon toddy (no alcohol)

Mug

The hot lemon and honey drink the NHS suggests for a sore throat: everything in a hot toddy that may help a cold, without the whiskey.

Ingredients
  • 2 tsp Honey
  • ¾ oz Fresh lemon juice
  • 6 oz Hot water

Squeeze about half a lemon into a mug (¾ oz of juice; USDA puts a whole lemon at 48 g), add the honey and top with just-boiled water. Stir and drink while warm. The NHS advises no honey for babies under 12 months and no hot drinks for small children.

4 oz of brewed black tea has about 24 mg of caffeine (USDA: 20 mg per 100 g). Late in the evening, a caffeine-free herbal tea gives almost the same numbers.

Does a hot toddy help a cold?

Partly. The parts that may ease symptoms are the heat, the honey and the hot water; the whiskey is the part that works against you. None of it is a cure: the NHS says most people start to feel better in 1 to 2 weeks. Here is each part against the evidence.

So if you are sick, the honey-lemon toddy keeps everything that may help and drops the part that does not: 53 calories, no alcohol. If you do have the whiskey, make it one, have water alongside, and skip it entirely if you have taken a cold or flu medicine.

When to see a doctor

The NHS says to see a doctor for a cold with a high temperature for more than 3 days; symptoms that get worse, or do not get better after 10 days; shortness of breath or chest pain; a cough that lasts more than 3 weeks; or if you have a long-term condition such as diabetes, or a heart, lung or kidney condition, or a weakened immune system. This page is information, not medical advice.

Hot toddy calories: the whiskey and the honey

Two ingredients carry almost all of it. In the classic, 1½ oz of 80 proof whiskey is 98 calories, all from alcohol, and 1 tbsp of honey is 69 calories and 17 g of sugar (USDA weighs a tablespoon at 21 g). The lemon adds 5; the hot water, nothing.

Which sweetener

The same classic toddy, with each sweetener in place of the tablespoon of honey. A tablespoon of honey carries more sugar than a tablespoon of maple syrup, and the sugar versions need only 2 teaspoons, so they cut the most.

How strong is a hot toddy?

Each spiked toddy here is one US standard drink, about 14 g of pure alcohol: the same as 1½ oz of 80 proof spirit, a 5 oz glass of 12% wine or a 12 oz beer (NIAAA). Spread through a mug of hot water, that comes to 8.9% to 9.7% alcohol, between beer and wine.

The hot water does not cook off the alcohol

The whiskey goes into water that has already come off the boil, which USDA's retention table puts at 85% of the alcohol kept. Only long simmering removes much of it:

MethodAlcohol left
  • Stirred into a hot liquid off the heat: a hot toddy85%
  • Flamed75%
  • Simmered 15 minutes40%
  • Simmered 30 minutes35%

A warm drink goes down easily, so pace it like any other. Eat first, since food slows how fast alcohol is absorbed, stay near one drink an hour, about what the body can process, and have water between mugs (Cleveland Clinic). Every recipe here has a lighter or zero-proof version for the second round.

The best whiskey for a hot toddy, by the numbers

Any whiskey works, and so do aged rum and brandy. Plain spirits have no carbohydrate (USDA), so at the same proof the choice changes the flavor, not the calories. What does differ is congeners: darker spirits tend to carry more, which may worsen a hangover (NIAAA). Our Hangover Index scores each type from 1 to 10; each row links to its cleanest bottles.

Which bottle: what it does to your mug

Each row is the classic toddy with 1½ oz of that bottle, lowest Hangover Index first. Proof is what moves the numbers: Wild Turkey 101 at 50.5% makes the mug 11.7% and 1.26 standard drinks. Jameson, Bushmills Original, Tullamore D.E.W. Original and Jim Beam White Label share the lowest Hangover Index here, 5 out of 10.

    Drinking safely

Skip the spirit if you have taken any cold, flu, cough or pain medicine, and keep the honey-lemon version on hand for drivers and anyone who is not drinking. If someone is confused, vomiting repeatedly, breathing slowly or irregularly, having a seizure or cannot be woken, call 911: those are signs of alcohol poisoning, and blood alcohol can keep rising after drinking stops (NIAAA).

    FAQ

What is a hot toddy? ▾

A warm drink of spirit, hot water, a sweetener and lemon. Whiskey and honey are the most common choice; rum, brandy, maple syrup or sugar work too. The classic here is 1½ oz whiskey, 1 tbsp honey, ½ oz lemon juice and 4 oz hot water, for 172 calories and one standard drink.

What alcohol is in a hot toddy? ▾

Usually whiskey: bourbon, rye, Irish or Scotch. Aged rum and brandy are the common alternatives. At 80 proof, all of them add the same 98 calories and no sugar per 1½ oz, so the choice changes the flavor, not the numbers. A higher proof bottle adds about 12 calories per 1½ oz for every 10 proof.

Is bourbon or whiskey better for a hot toddy? ▾

Bourbon is a whiskey: US law defines it as made from at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak, and like every US whiskey it is bottled at 80 proof or more. Any of them works. If you are choosing by the numbers, proof decides the strength and calories, and the bottle table shows each one in a toddy with its Hangover Index.

How many calories are in a hot toddy? ▾

About 172 for the classic: 98 from 1½ oz of 80 proof whiskey, 69 from the tablespoon of honey and a few from the lemon. The versions here run from 139 (the rum hot toddy) to 173 calories. Half the honey brings the classic to 137.

How much sugar is in a hot toddy? ▾

About 18 g in the classic, nearly all from 1 tbsp of honey (21 g, per USDA). Whiskey has none. 2 tsp of brown or granulated sugar instead brings it to about 8.7 to 9.3 g; with no sweetener it is 0.4 g, all from the lemon. See which sweetener for the full comparison.

Does a hot toddy help a cold? ▾

The hot water and honey may ease symptoms; nothing shows the whiskey helps. In a small trial a hot drink relieved a sore throat, cough, runny nose and chills better than the same drink at room temperature, and a review of 14 studies found honey eased coughs. Alcohol increases fluid loss and fragments sleep, and the NHS advice for a cold is rest and plenty of fluids. The honey-lemon version keeps everything that helps.

Can I drink a hot toddy with cold medicine? ▾

Better not. NIAAA warns that alcohol with cold, flu, allergy and cough medicines such as diphenhydramine, chlorpheniramine and dextromethorphan causes drowsiness and dizziness and raises the risk of overdose. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) with alcohol risks liver damage, and ibuprofen, naproxen or aspirin with alcohol risk stomach bleeding and ulcers. Check the label of anything you are taking, or ask a pharmacist.

Does the alcohol cook off in a hot toddy? ▾

Very little. The whiskey goes into hot water off the heat, and USDA's retention table puts alcohol added that way at 85% retained. Even simmered, it takes time: 40% remains after 15 minutes and 25% after an hour. The numbers on this page count all of the alcohol.

How strong is a hot toddy? ▾

The classic is 9.2% alcohol, between beer and wine, and one US standard drink: the same alcohol as a 12 oz beer or a 5 oz glass of wine. With a 101 proof bottle like Wild Turkey 101 it is 11.7% and 1.26 standard drinks.

Does a hot toddy get you drunk? ▾

One hot toddy is one standard drink, so about as much as one beer. How it feels depends on your size, how fast you drink and whether you have eaten, since food slows how fast alcohol is absorbed. The body processes roughly one drink an hour, so a second toddy within the hour stacks on the first.

Can you make a hot toddy without alcohol? ▾

Yes: hot water, honey and lemon, which is the hot lemon and honey drink the NHS suggests for a sore throat. The version here is 53 calories and 12 g of sugar. Brewed tea or hot cider in place of the water works too. Do not give honey to babies under 12 months.

Can I make a hot toddy with tea? ▾

Yes. Use brewed black tea in place of the hot water, as in the tea version here: 150 calories with 2 tsp honey. 4 oz of black tea adds about 24 mg of caffeine and almost no calories (USDA); a caffeine-free herbal tea gives nearly the same numbers.

How the numbers work: each ingredient's carbohydrate, sugar, fat and protein come from its USDA FoodData Central entry and portion weight; alcohol comes from ABV and volume. Calories use 7 per gram of alcohol and 4 per gram of carbohydrate or protein. Dissolved sugar is counted at the volume it adds to the drink. Spices, garnishes and the lemon wheel are not counted. Search volumes are Google Ads US figures: "hot toddy" averages 201,000 searches a month and peaks at 450,000 in December, with 368,000 in January.
