Espresso martini calories

What an espresso martini really comes to in calories, sugar, caffeine and alcohol, how the common builds differ, and how much sugar each coffee liqueur brings. Every figure is worked out from USDA FoodData Central, the Kahlúa label and measured liqueur data.

The short answer

An espresso martini (1½ oz vodka, 1 oz Kahlúa, 1 oz espresso, ¼ oz simple syrup) is 197 calories with 16 g of sugar, about 67 mg of caffeine and 1.33 standard drinks. Skip the syrup and it is 181. Halve the Kahlúa as well and it is 141 with 5.8 g of sugar. The IBA bar spec comes to 216.

Where the calories come from

About 66% of the calories are alcohol and 33% are sugar. The vodka is the biggest line, but it is fixed, and the espresso is close to nothing. The Kahlúa is the part that decides the drink: 80 of the 197 calories, 12 of the 16 g of sugar and a quarter of the alcohol.

Why you see different numbers

Espresso martinis have no single recipe. Difford's Guide prints 175 calories for ⅔ oz of liqueur and no syrup, while the IBA's 50 mL vodka, 30 mL Kahlúa and 10 mL syrup come to 216 by our math. The calorie counters in Google's results ranged from 168 to 224 per drink on 2026-11-01. From our classic build, each change is simple to work out:

  • ½ oz more vodka +33 calories +0.33 std
  • ½ oz more Kahlúa +40 calories +5.8g sugar
  • ¼ oz more simple syrup +16 calories +4.1g sugar

How much caffeine is in an espresso martini?

About 67 mg, nearly all from the espresso. USDA lists 64 mg in 1 oz of espresso, and Kahlúa says about 5 mg in 1½ oz of liqueur. That is about 71% of an 8 oz cup of brewed coffee, and one sixth of the 400 mg a day FDA cites as an amount not generally linked to negative effects for most adults.

ItemCaffeine
  • Espresso martini (1 oz espresso, 1 oz Kahlúa) 67 mg
  • 1 oz espresso 64 mg
  • 2 oz espresso (a double) 127 mg
  • 1 oz brewed coffee 12 mg
  • 1 oz decaf espresso 0.3 mg
  • 1 oz Kahlúa (from the brand) 3 mg
  • 1 oz coffee liqueur (USDA's generic entry) 9 mg
  • 8 oz cup of brewed coffee 95 mg

Real shots vary with the bean, the grind and the machine, so treat these as estimates. Made with brewed coffee in place of espresso, the drink has the same calories and far less caffeine; cold brew concentrates vary, so check the label. Made with decaf espresso, it drops to about 4 mg.

What caffeine does with alcohol

The coffee can make you feel more alert. It does not make you more sober. We found no study of espresso martinis themselves, so this is what the research on caffeine and alcohol shows.

It does not sober you up

The CDC says the effects of alcohol on your body do not change when it is used with caffeine. It warns that caffeine may make alcohol seem to be affecting you less, which can lead to drinking more.

Lab results are mixed

With 146 young adults, about 220 mg of caffeine lowered how drunk they felt and kept up the desire to drink. With 28 people, caffeine did not change perceived intoxication but made them feel more stimulated.

More drinks? Not clearly

In a double-blind study of 31 adults, added caffeine did not raise the number of drinks people chose to have. It did make them feel more stimulated and less sedated, and 65% preferred the caffeinated drink.

The dose matters

The larger study gave about 220 mg of caffeine, and the study of 28 people gave 2 mg per kg of body weight, about 140 mg for a 70 kg adult. One espresso martini has about 67 mg, so those results fit two or three drinks better than one.

Regulators have acted on this before. In November 2010 the FDA warned four companies, including the makers of Four Loko and Joose, that caffeine added to their malt drinks was an unsafe food additive. That action covered those products, and the FDA page does not mention coffee cocktails or coffee liqueur. The practical point still applies: feeling awake is not the same as being fit to drive, and only time clears alcohol.

Coffee liqueurs by sugar

The liqueur is the part you can change without changing the drink. Norway's state retailer, Vinmonopolet, publishes measured sugar, so we read the coffee liqueurs we could find there. The sweetest bottle holds four times the sugar of the driest.

Read 2026-11-01. Bottles sold in Norway can differ from US ones. Kahlúa is 16% there and 20% in the US (21.5% in Ohio), so its row uses the US label and Vinmonopolet's sugar reading; the 16% label shows nearly all its carbohydrate is sugar. Mr Black is 21% there and 25% in the US. USDA's two generic coffee liqueur entries, 11 g and 13 g of sugar per ounce, sit either side of Kahlúa. Cream liqueurs are left out because no fat figure is published.

Canned and bottled espresso martinis

These vary far more than the bar version. Across four ready-to-pour bottles Vinmonopolet measured, sugar runs from under 1 g to nearly 18 g in a 3 oz glass, so the name on the bottle tells you little.

We could not check a printed label panel for a US can, so we list none here. Check the size as well as the strength: a 12 oz can at 13% ABV, for example, would hold 2.6 standard drinks, about twice what a bar's espresso martini does.

How strong is an espresso martini?

Our classic build holds 19 g of alcohol, 1.33 US standard drinks, at about 21% ABV before ice melts into it. The vodka is 1 standard drink, and the Kahlúa adds a third of another. The IBA build is 1.47.

Three of them come to 4 standard drinks, the level NIAAA defines as binge drinking for women within about 2 hours (5 for men). Pacing it, eating first and having water between drinks are the practical answers (Cleveland Clinic). Coffee the next morning will not undo it: see what helps a hangover.

Espresso martini vs carajillo

A carajillo is the other coffee cocktail people order: equal parts espresso and Licor 43 over ice, popular in Mexico and based on an older Spanish drink. Licor 43 is a vanilla-citrus liqueur at 31% with 412 g of sugar per liter, so with 1½ oz of each it comes to 153 calories, 18 g of sugar and 0.78 standard drinks.

That is 44 fewer calories than an espresso martini and 42% less alcohol, but a little more sugar, and more caffeine (about 95 mg) because it pours more espresso.

Which vodka for an espresso martini

For calories, any 80 proof vodka: all of them hold 98 calories per 1½ oz. Our vodka soda page lists every bottle in our data by strength, the healthiest vodkas page ranks them on chemistry, and gluten-free vodka sorts them by base. Swapping in tequila at the same proof changes nothing in the math, at 197 calories.

Lowest calorie first. Vodka is 80 proof, the US minimum. Kahlúa is the US 20% bottle. ABV is the drink before ice melts into it. Use fresh espresso and shake hard with ice. Garnishes are not counted.

Sugar-free espresso martini

Coupe

No liqueur or syrup at all: vodka and a stronger pour of espresso, sweetened to taste if you want it.

Ingredients
  • 1½ oz Vodka
  • 1½ oz Espresso

Shake hard with ice and strain. A zero-calorie sweetener adds nothing we count; check its label if you are counting carbs, as some powders carry dextrose or maltodextrin.

Who invented the espresso martini?

The London bartender Dick Bradsell created it about 1983 at the Soho Brasserie, according to Difford's Guide. It began as a Vodka Espresso, served on the rocks, and picked up the martini name later. The IBA now lists it among its New Era cocktails.

FAQ

How many calories are in an espresso martini? ▾

197 for 1½ oz of vodka, 1 oz of Kahlúa, 1 oz of espresso and ¼ oz of simple syrup. The IBA's slightly larger spec is 216, and without the syrup the drink is 181. About 66% of the calories are alcohol and nearly all the rest is sugar, so a bigger pour moves the number quickly.

Do espresso martinis have a lot of sugar? ▾

More than most cocktails, at 16 g, about 4 teaspoons. That is roughly 31% of the 50 g Daily Value for added sugars, and 12 g of it is the Kahlúa. A classic margarita has about half as much, though one from a bottled mix has more. Skip the syrup and it is 12 g; halve the Kahlúa as well and it is 5.8 g.

How many carbs are in an espresso martini? ▾

16 g in the classic build, nearly all of it sugar from the Kahlúa and syrup. Vodka has none, and an ounce of espresso has 0.5 g. For a low carb version, a sugar-free build with no liqueur has 0.8 g.

How much caffeine is in an espresso martini? ▾

About 67 mg, using USDA's 64 mg for a 1 oz espresso and Kahlúa's own figure of about 5 mg in 1½ oz. That is about 71% of an 8 oz cup of brewed coffee (95 mg). A double shot would make it about 131 mg. Espresso strength varies, so treat these as estimates.

Is 2 espresso martinis too much? ▾

Two come to 394 calories, 31 g of sugar, 2.67 standard drinks and about 134 mg of caffeine. The caffeine is well under the 400 mg a day FDA cites for most adults, so the alcohol is the limit that matters. Three is 4 standard drinks, which NIAAA counts as binge drinking for women if it happens within about 2 hours (5 for men). Caffeine does not offset any of it.

How strong is an espresso martini? ▾

1.33 US standard drinks, and about 21% ABV before ice melts into it. That is stronger than a vodka soda, which is 1 standard drink, because the Kahlúa adds alcohol on top of the vodka. The IBA spec is 1.47.

How unhealthy is an espresso martini? ▾

It is a sweet, strong cocktail, not a health drink, and the alcohol is what carries the risk. The coffee in it does not change that. It is number 22 of the 26 classics on our low calorie cocktails list, lightest first, and number 23 for sugar. Having one, skipping the syrup and keeping water alongside it are the practical changes.

What is in an espresso martini? ▾

Vodka, coffee liqueur, fresh espresso and usually a little sugar syrup, shaken hard with ice. The IBA spec is 50 mL vodka, 30 mL Kahlúa, 10 mL sugar syrup and 1 strong espresso, with 3 coffee beans on top. There is no vermouth, so it is a martini by name and glass only.

How do you make a low calorie espresso martini? ▾

Cut the sweet parts, since the vodka is fixed. Skipping the syrup brings the drink to 181, halving the Kahlúa to 141, and dropping the liqueur for extra espresso to 102. A drier coffee liqueur also helps: the same build with Mr Black comes to about 160 with 6.4 g of sugar.

Can you make an espresso martini without Kahlúa? ▾

Yes. Any coffee liqueur works, and the table above shows them running from 3 to 12 g of sugar per ounce. With no liqueur at all, use vodka, espresso and a little syrup or sweetener. Each ¼ oz of simple syrup adds 16 calories.

How many calories are in Kahlúa? ▾

The US bottle's label gives 199 calories and 29.5 g of carbohydrate per 2.5 oz, which is about 120 calories and 18 g in a 1½ oz shot, or 80 per ounce. The US strength is 20%. The 16% bottling sold in some other markets is about 108 calories per 1½ oz. See our Kahlúa page.

What is the best coffee liqueur for an espresso martini? ▾

That depends on taste, but the numbers differ a lot. Kahlúa and Luxardo Espresso are the sweetest on our list, near 400 g of sugar per liter. Tia Maria is 290, Mr Black 215 and Quaglia Ninebar 190. Pick by taste, then use the sugar figure to decide whether the drink needs syrup at all.

What is the best vodka for an espresso martini? ▾

For calories, any 80 proof vodka: they are all 98 calories per 1½ oz. A clean, neutral vodka lets the coffee lead. Our healthiest vodkas ranks bottles by chemistry, and gluten-free vodka sorts them by base.

Does a Baileys espresso martini have more calories? ▾

Slightly: about 202 against 181 for the same build with Kahlúa, though with less sugar (6.1 g against 12 g). Baileys is lower in sugar than Kahlúa but adds 4.9 g of fat per ounce, and fat has more than twice the calories of sugar.

What is a carajillo? ▾

A Mexican coffee cocktail of Licor 43 and espresso, usually in equal parts over ice, based on an older Spanish drink. With 1½ oz of each it is 153 calories, 18 g of sugar, 0.78 standard drinks and about 95 mg of caffeine: fewer calories and less alcohol than an espresso martini, but a little more sugar and more caffeine.

Which martini has the lowest calories? ▾

Of the classics we work out, a cosmopolitan is 167 calories, a dry martini (2½ oz gin, ½ oz dry vermouth) 179 with almost no sugar, and an espresso martini 197. They are close, so the pour matters more than the name. A skinny espresso martini is 141.

Will an espresso martini keep me awake? ▾

It might, and it can affect sleep even if you feel fine. In one home study, 400 mg of caffeine taken as long as 6 hours before bed still disturbed sleep. That is about six times what one drink holds, so a single drink is a much smaller dose. Alcohol works against sleep as well: in a six-week study of financial traders it lowered sleep quality. Decaf espresso removes nearly all the caffeine and changes nothing else.

Who invented the espresso martini? ▾

London bartender Dick Bradsell, about 1983 at the Soho Brasserie, according to Difford's Guide. He served it on the rocks as a Vodka Espresso, and the martini name came later. The IBA now lists it among its New Era cocktails.

How the numbers work: each ingredient's carbohydrate, sugar, fat and protein come from its USDA FoodData Central entry and portion weight, Kahlúa from its US label and Vinmonopolet's measured sugar, and other liqueurs from Vinmonopolet's measured figures; alcohol comes from ABV and volume. Calories use 7 per gram of alcohol, 4 per gram of carbohydrate or protein and 9 per gram of fat. A standard drink is 14 g of alcohol (NIAAA). Search volumes are Google Ads US monthly averages.
